There are a lot of sweeping statements made about Romanian & overseas rescue dogs - many of them well-meaning, but not always accurate.
๐พ Street dogs have trauma.
๐พ Overseas rescue dogs are all โreactive.โ
๐พ Dogs from abroad canโt adapt to a home life.
These and many other statements like them can be true for some Romanian & overseas rescue dogs - but they're certainly not true for the majority of them.
And we do them a real injustice by assuming they are.
What these dogs do tend to share is a very different start in life, and a unique set of needs that don't always fit the standard mould people expect.
But for me that's exactly what makes them so fascinating and so worthy of being understood on their own terms.
So I've put together a few myth-busting slides to help shift the narrative - Because these dogs donโt need fixing.
They need understanding, patience, and acceptance of who they are - that's the ticket to getting the puzzle pieces to fit. ๐ฅฐ๐พโค๏ธ
The most important recommendations I can make are these:
If you are thinking of adopting - or your new arrival is on it's way: Be prepared for anything but expect nothing.
If you are navigating challenges with your Romanian or overseas rescue dogs: Take a step back and focus on your relationship & communication - if necessary rebuilding trust, effective communication & reducing stress for you both.
No matter what you are doing, or will do in the future with your dogs - nothing is ever one and done, things are fluid and always changing when you live with a sentient being - so always:
๐ 'See the Dog' in front of you in that moment.
๐ Make sure you truly understand the nuances of canine communication & body language
๐ Work with what your dog is telling you in that moment
๐ Seek the guidance of a suitably qualified force free professional with experience of working with Romanian & overseas rescue dogs.
I fully appreciate working with a behaviourist or behaviour consultant can be expensive - this is one of the reasons I started my Adopters Training & Support Group - to provide affordable access to detailed resources & support from qualified professionals who have extensive experience with overseas rescue dogs.
Whilst it certainly isn't a replacement for the in-depth level of assessment you get from working on a one to one basis with a professional - it has helped 100's of adopters navigate challenges with their beautiful natural world dogs.
It could be just what you've been looking for - pretty much every member says 'They wish they'd found it sooner' when they join. ๐
