Join me for a deep dive into all things recall with your Romanian and overseas rescue dog, exploring why recall can be challenging and sharing practical tips and strategies to help build a more reliable recall.
Does your dog have selective hearing? π
You callβ¦
They look at youβ¦
They think about itβ¦
And then decide that whatever they are doing is far more interesting!
Or better yet, they just plain ignore you completely!
Believe me I know how you feel! π
With a very independently minded Guardian breed mix, establishing a reliable recall was (frustrating) I mean fun! π¬
Recall is one of the most important skills we can build with our dogs. But with many of our more naturally evolved Romanian and overseas rescue dogs, it isn't always as simple as teaching a cue and expecting them to come running.
A reliable recall is built on so much more than a word.
It involves understanding your dog's:
π Individual temperament and natural behavioural preferences.
π Emotional capacity, and how this may change when they're out in the world.
π Preferred communication and reinforcement styles, and what can increase or decrease motivation.
π Environmental safety profile - a dog who doesn't feel safe will focus on meeting safety needs over responding to recall
In this practical workshop, we'll explore:
β
Why recall training can be challenging with many Romanian and overseas rescue dogs.
β
The foundations that help create a stronger, more reliable recall.
β
How fear, anxiety, confidence, environment, and previous experiences can affect your dog's ability to respond.
β
Why your dog's recall may vary depending on the situation.
β
Common mistakes that can accidentally make your recall training fail.
β
Practical strategies to building a reliable recall with a naturally evolved dog.
β
Teaching approaches that recognise your individual dog's needs and preferences.
Whether your dog disappears into their own little world as soon as you unclip the lead or just seems to believe recall is more of a suggestion than a request π, this workshop will help you understand why - and what you can do to build a more reliable recall.
As always, the focus isn't on quick fixes or perfect obedience. It's about effective communication, trust and a recall that works for your individual dog.
